Section 504 Plan

A Section 504 plan is a legal document that outlines accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities who need them to participate in and benefit from school. It’s part of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, which prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in programs receiving federal funding, including schools. Essentially, a 504 plan ensures that students with disabilities have equal access to education and related activities.

These plans are legally binding, just like an IFSP and IEP. A section 504 plan typically is a first step at providing accommodations for students in the academic setting. Often, a Section 504 plan is switched to an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) later in elementary school.
